Our neighbor, the British Museum

The British Museum

Since we had a little block of time before leaving for the National Gallery, I detoured to the British Museum on our way home from class. It was absolutely mobbed, but pretty neat. And, like many of the museums in London, it is free!

Ceiling in the Great Court

Right when you walk in, you enter the Great Court. In the middle is a circular Reading Room building, but the ceiling is what captures your attention... an entire covering of geometric clear tiles.

The main attraction, the Rosetta Stone

I wanted to find the Rosetta Stone, which was easily the most crowded exhibit in the already crowded place. I was surprised how easy it was to see the different starting and stopping points of the hieroglyphs: hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek (not that I could read any!)

Next up, off to Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. Hopefully we get to see some entertainment on the plinth!
