Out to the tower, and off with your head!

Britt is back!

This afternoon took us eastbound to the Tower of London. We were joined by our good friend and excellent guide, Britt. Her knowledge of all things England amazes me! She seems to know every little bit of history... which is why she is our favorite :)

Many of Britt's stories were concerning the main purposes of the Tower: treason and death. The Tower of London was home to England's most wanted and the enemies of the royals. Prisoners were held in the many towers until being freed or, most likely, their execution.

We had a special surprise during our visit: Prof Williams pulled some strings and was granted permission that allowed us to enter the Bell Tower. The Bell Tower hosted some famous enemies including Sir Thomas Moore (a main character in our play, "A Man For All Seasons") and Queen Elizabeth I. Our trip to the Bell Tower was guided by a Yeoman Warder, a knowledgable guide who has served in the English army. He said the last American to enter the tower was Michelle Obama with daughters Sasha and Malia a couple of weeks ago!

The Tower of London had two special exhibits: Henry VIII's Dressed to Kill, featuring his armor, and the Crown Jewels in the Jewel House. Although Henry's armor was interesting, my favorite were the Crown Jewels... when given the choice between pewter or diamonds, I think I will pick diamonds every time! We saw a video of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, and I recognized the exact spot where it took place inside Westminster Abbey (Britt had pointed it out last week). I was mesmerized by the ornateness of the royal accessories! There was a punch bowl that could have easily been a baptismal font at a cathedral! The crowns are absolutely breathtaking and positively regal.
